Where Your Living Room is the Beach
A two minute walk from the Main Ferry Dock and Lighthouse Liquors, two doors down from St. James Methodist Church, and a five minute walk from the market, the Windward House is in the heart of the settlement of Hope Town. Windward is one of the largest homes within the settlement. With 2200 square feet, four bedrooms and three full bathrooms, it's an extraordinary spot for two families or four couples. Overflow sleeping accommodations include a queen sized snore box over looking the Harbour, twin sized mattressed bay dormer seats (great for kids), a living area futon, and roll away cots. This allows large groups to stay together under one roof. The two massive upstairs bedrooms divide the level and share a large master bath. The western room overlooks the Harbour offering a stunning view of the sunsets behind the lighthouse. The eastern room overlooks the white sandy beach and turquoise waters of the Atlantic and in the evenings, offer an unforgettable star-gazing location. Lower bedrooms are identical master suites each with full bathrooms and private balconies facing the picturesque settlement and Harbour.
Windward sports a fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a five burner gas stove, dishwasher, full sized oven and microwave and a side-by-side refrigerator. Granite countertops and exotic tropical hardwoods from the most stringently regulated Central American forests adorn the house and render the walls of the house a natural work of art. The open lower level floor plan includes an office, living room and kitchen. Screened jalousie ocean doors swing open fully, bringing the seascape and beach to your living room and kitchen. The jalousies also offer optimal control of the prevailing sea breezes occurring at the ridge of the dune, allowing for unparalleled natural ventilation through all parts of the house. Room zoned A/C units are provided for back up or alternate preferences. Windward's diesel generator provides reliable power during the occasional quirk of the island's power grid. Each bedroom is equipped with a TV and cable box. Wireless and hard wired internet are available along with Vonage phone service for calls to the U.S., England, and much of Europe. The VHF radio offers local alternate communication and connection.
Just off the ocean-side patio, a two mile stretch of white sandy beach stretches a broad crescent until disappearing around the northern point of the island. Coral reefs abound off the beach, providing easy access to striking marine worlds for snorkelers. The reefs also break up the strong Atlantic surf, allowing for calmer waters that are great for all ages. Being within the settlement, Windward places one at most a five minute walk from a variety of stores, shops, and fun spots. Grab some of the best fresh pies, breads, and other delectables from Vernon's grocery and enjoy colorful quotes around the shop. Capt'n Jack's keep things lively hosting Bingo (make sure you yell "Jacks") Monday nights, trivia on Thursdays and a DJ Wednesdays and Fridays after dinner. The answer for those seeking their daily cafés is the Hope Town Coffee House, who beyond roasting their own beans behind the shop, bake their own scones, muffins, and quiches, have an outdoor patio, and display a variety of local artists work in their shop. Local boutiques offer a variety of mementos and local hand crafted items to remind you of your trip. Locals are exceedingly friendly, always willing to offer help, stories, and history of the area. Hope Town is a quaint, quirky, charming town, an ideal retreat for those wishing for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation in the heart of an authentic and historic community of the Bahamas.
Hope Town's whimsical setting and intimate experience is attributed to its secluded nature. This makes your travel day a little more elaborate but well worth the effort. Fly into Marsh Harbour, the closest airport on the main island of Abaco. It is served by a number of airlines including Bahamas Air, United, American Airlines, Silver Air, and a variety of smaller charter groups including Twin Air Calypso and Cherokee Air. Once you arrive in Marsh Harbour you will need to grab a taxi. Just let your driver know you are headed to Alburys' Ferry dock to grab the Hope Town Ferry.
